Eric Johnson, PhD Student (BioE)
Co-advised by Prof. Abigail Koppes
Eric is working on characterizing the activity of microbes and their metabolites involved in brain signaling using a microphysiological model of the gut-brain axis. Enjoys biking, thrifting and D&D.
Dr. Matthew Fernez, PhD (2025)
Matt's thesis examined the impact of hydrogen sulfide on the mucosal lining of the gut. In addition to establishing and managing a fruitful collaboration between the Woolston and Carrier labs, Matt developed a transcriptional biosensor for hydrogen sulfide, paving the way for faster, less invasive IBD diagnostics. He was also the laboratory safety officer.
